Microsoft rolled out an updated version of OneDrive in January that uses the updated API, while competitor Dropbox is still working on a fix. Even with the incredible speed improvements that the M1 chip brings, it is also more battery-efficient than any other Mac chip Apple has released to date. macOS 12.3 Beta broke applications that used the older kernel extensions, requiring apps to use the newer File Provider API. Microsoft has been hard at work on OneDrive for macOS recently, partially due to Apple deprecating the kernel extensions that most cloud synchronization applications used for monitoring file changes. The functionality is only available on macOS Monterey 12.1, at least for now.

Microsoft says this is especially useful for organizations, because they can provide new computers to employees with all of their files ready to go immediately. In the Public Preview channel, Microsoft is also testing support for Folder Backup (also known as "Known Folder Move") on Mac, which allows the system's Desktop and Documents folders to be synchronized through OneDrive, just like the normal OneDrive folder. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are the Mac and Windows equivalents and the three direct alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPointthey’re essentially free. Folder Backup in OneDrive Preview (Source: Microsoft) If you’re going to let go of the Microsoft world and you’re looking for a free word processor for Mac, your best bet is to join the Google alliance. Does OpenOffice operate flawlessly on Apple's new M1 chips I ask this because I am naughty and did not read the Survival Guide where I would have learned that these are not developers' forums.
